.mobi

.mobi is a top-level domain submitted to ICANN for approval as a sponsored TLD. It would be restricted to mobile devices and sites providing services for them. It is sponsored by a consortium of companies including Microsoft, Vodafone, Samsung, Sun Microsystems, and Nokia. As of December 2004, negotiations for its management were underway, and approval and implementation was expected in 2005.

Controversy

In its short life, ".mobi" has already sparked criticism due to allegedly breaking the principles of device independence.
