Alliance for Progress

The Alliance for Progress (Alianza para el Progreso) initiated by President John Kennedy in 1961 aimed to establish economic cooperation between North and South America. The conditions for the aid from the United States to Latin American nations included land and tax reform, more democratic government, and greater stability. While the aid was intended to counter the emerging communist threat from Cuba, it whithered as the 1960s ended with few Latin American counties willing to commit to reform, and the program was formally disbanded in 1973.
