The city of Borgholm is, and always has been, one of the smallest cities in Sweden and although its the main city of the Oelandia province it has a mere population of 3,280 (1996). The city received its privileges in 1816 and emerged as a spa-town in the shadow of the ruins of the ones so mighty Borgholm Castle , which sadly burned to the ground in 1806. The city has served as centre of northern Oelandia, and remains one of the most popular summer cities in Sweden. Despite its small size the city centre is quite urban, with a grid-net of streets and many shops, restaurants and hotels.
Borgholms Castle has its modern counterpart outside Borgholm, since the Swedish Royal Family has its official summer residence at Solliden Palace a couple of kilometres outside the city. The Crown Princess Victoria's birthday is annually celebrated on July 14th at the Borgholm Sports Field.
The city is situated some 20 kilometres north of the Öland bridge which connects the island with the city of Kalmar.
