Conventional X-ray generator

Conventional X-ray generators

The four basic components of an X-ray producing machine include:

  1. a source of electrons
  2. a vacuum within which the electrons are accelerated
  3. an energy source which cause the electrons to be accelerated
  4. a target made of a high atomic number, high melting point metal

In the conventional X-ray generator, these components are specifically:

  1. thermionic emission from a heated electrode
  2. a short (0.1 -0.5 metre) hollow sealed glass tube.
  3. a potential difference, ie, a voltage applied from a transformer.
  4. a tungsten target.

Of course there are many more components and control systems associated with the machine than these but these are the basics.
