Council of Canadians

The Council of Canadians is a left-wing think tank in Canada that was founded in 1985.

The Council is politically to the left of the ruling Liberal Party of Canada, and its beliefs are even less aligned with the opposition Conservative Party of Canada. The group is strongly opposed to most forms of increased social, economic, and political integration with the United States, especially on matters such as free trade and the Strategic Defense Initiative ("Star Wars"). The Council was against the Canada-U.S. Free Trade Agreement, and the North American Free Trade Agreement, and remains highly critical of their effects. Politically, it is strictly non-partisan.

The current Chair of the group is Maude Barlow. The current executive director of the group is John Urquhart .

The Council publishes a seasonal magazine called Canadian Perspectives.
