Edgefield, South Carolina

Edgefield is a town located in Edgefield County, South Carolina. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 4,449. It is the county seat of Edgefield County.

Geography

Edgefield is located at 33°47'13" North, 81°55'40" West (33.786840, -81.927839)1.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 10.7 km² (4.2 mi²). 10.5 km² (4.1 mi²) of it is land and 0.2 km² (0.1 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 1.93% water.

Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 4,449 people, 1,080 households, and 697 families residing in the town. The population density is 422.1/km² (1,094.3/mi²). There are 1,229 housing units at an average density of 116.6/km² (302.3/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 38.82% White, 59.92% African American, 0.49% Native American, 0.31% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.18% from other races, and 0.27% from two or more races. 4.47% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 1,080 households out of which 28.9% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 37.8% are married couples living together, 23.2% have a female householder with no husband present, and 35.4% are non-families. 32.9% of all households are made up of individuals and 16.9% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.34 and the average family size is 2.96.

In the town the population is spread out with 14.1% under the age of 18, 9.0% from 18 to 24, 44.1% from 25 to 44, 20.0% from 45 to 64, and 12.8% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 36 years. For every 100 females there are 195.6 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 221.4 males.

The median income for a household in the town is $24,977, and the median income for a family is $30,721. Males have a median income of $25,478 versus $23,462 for females. The per capita income for the town is $8,125. 25.0% of the population and 20.7% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 35.1% of those under the age of 18 and 23.2% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
