The term General Post Office is or has been used by a number of postal and telecommunications governmental administrations worldwide, including:

- India, see General Post Office, Mumbai. It is the term for the head post office in any major city.
- Ireland: General Post Office is the name of the main post office in the Republic of Ireland, see General Post Office (Dublin)
- Australia: General Post Office is the name of the main post office, in each state, although it is normally referred to by the name of the city in which it is located, i.e. Sydney GPO, Melbourne GPO, etc.
- Hong Kong: There is one General Post Office in the central business district. It has the role of the headquarters of the postal service of Hong Kong.
- United States: the general post office is called the General Mail Facility and it serves as the primary collection, sorting and distribution point for a given area.
