In Kerala INL has close relations with the Left Democratic Front. In the state assembly elections in 2001 INL launched one candidate, supported by LDF, in Tirur. The candidate, professor A.P. Abdul Vahab, received 45 511 votes (39,78%).

In the Tamil Nadu state assembly elections in 1996 INL was an ally of Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam, and won five seats.

In the Tamil Nadu state assembly elections in 2001 INL was an ally of All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam. In the 2004 Lok Sabha elections INL participated in a 'third front' in Tamil Nadu, led by Puthiya Tamizhagam .
