Jesse Marvin Unruh (1922 - 1987) -- also known as "Big Daddy" Unruh -- was a Democratic politician. He was born in Newton, Kansas on September 30, 1922. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II.
His political career began as a candidate for Presidential Elector for California in 1956; he was a member of California State Assembly, and Speaker of the California State Assembly, 1961-69; delegate to Democratic National Convention from California, 1960. He left the legislature to run for Governor of California against Ronald Reagan in 1970, then was a candidate for mayor of Los Angeles in 1973, and at last was elected California state treasurer , and served from 1975 to 1987. Unruh died in office of prostate cancer on August 4, 1987. His religion was described as Protestant, and he was a member of the American Legion. His burial location is unknown.
