MYA

For the R&B singer, see Mya (singer).

MYA is an acronym used by geologists and paleontologists for "Million Years Ago".

The Burmese language (ISO 639 alpha-3, mya)

Similar abbreviations

  • TYA: Thousand years ago
  • BYA: Billion Years Ago (109 years)1
  • kYA: kiloYears Ago (1 kY = 1,000 years)
  • GYA: GigaYears Ago (1 GY = 109 years)

The proper SI units for these are the kiloyear (ka) and gigayear (Ga).

1 BYA uses the short scale billion (109), not the long scale billion (1012). This potential for confusion makes it less universal than GYA.
