Morris County is a county located in the state of New Jersey. As of 2000, the population is 470,212. Its county seat is Morristown6.

Geography

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,247 km² (481 mi²). 1,215 km² (469 mi²) of it is land and 32 km² (12 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 2.55% water.

Government

As of the 2000 Election the Board of Chosen Freeholder consists of Cecilia G. Laureys, Douglas R. Cabana, Frank J. Druetzler, John Inglesino, Margaret Nordstrom, Jack Schrier, and John J. Murphy.

Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 470,212 people, 169,711 households, and 124,907 families residing in the county. The population density is 387/km² (1,003/mi²). There are 174,379 housing units at an average density of 144/km² (372/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 87.20% White, 2.80% Black or African American, 0.12% Native American, 6.26% Asian, 0.04% Pacific Islander, 2.01% from other races, and 1.56% from two or more races. 7.79% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 169,711 households out of which 35.40% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 62.80% are married couples living together, 7.90% have a female householder with no husband present, and 26.40% are non-families. 21.50% of all households are made up of individuals and 7.30% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.72 and the average family size is 3.18.

In the county the population is spread out with 24.80% under the age of 18, 6.40% from 18 to 24, 31.90% from 25 to 44, 25.30% from 45 to 64, and 11.60% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 38 years. For every 100 females there are 95.80 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 92.70 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $77,340, and the median income for a family is $89,773. Males have a median income of $60,165 versus $40,065 for females. The per capita income for the county is $36,964. 3.90% of the population and 2.40% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 3.70% of those under the age of 18 and 5.30% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
