Nájera

Najera (Nájera in Spanish, Naiara in Basque) is a city located in La Rioja Alta, La Rioja, Spain upon river Najerilla.

The site interested the Romans, who buildt the city of Tritium on the territories that today are the municipalities of Nájera and Tricio . It was then occupied by North African muslims and later by the Navarrans who buildt Santa María la Real in 1045.

It was the capital city of the kingdom of Navarre until it was conquered by Castile in 1054 after the battle of Atapuerca .
