National Underwater and Marine Agency

The National Underwater and Marine Agency (NUMA) in the United States is dedicated to "preserving maritime heritage through the discovery, archaeological survey and conservation of shipwreck artifacts." Based on a fictional organization, the device of author Clive Cussler, the non-fictional version, NUMA, is a private non-profit organization headed up by Clive Cussler with the goal of preserving the maritime heritage through the discovery, exploration and conservation of shipwreck artifacts.

Cussler lives a life which closely parallels his protagonist in a series of highly successful adventure novels, Dirk Pitt, the head of the fictional NUMA. The real world NUMA is a non profit organization and has actually discovered many sunken ships.

NUMA found the CSS H.L. Hunley in 1995. Cussler along with NUMA have a television series on underwater exploration called "The Seahunters" on which you can see the discovery and subsequent removal and conseravation. The show also faetures a number of other shipwrecks in various international locations.
