Negroamaro is a red grape variety native to southern Italy. The name means "black bitter," and can indeed produce wines very deep in color. Wines made from Negroamaro tend to be very rustic in character, combing perfume with an earthy bitterness. In Puglia it produces some of the best red wines, particularly when blended with the highly scented Malvasia Nera, such as in Salice Salentino.
