Node (astronomy)

A node is one of two points where a body's orbit crosses its plane of reference. When moving northward it is called the ascending node, and when moving southward it is called the descending node.

The lunar nodes are subject to lunar precession, which is the gradual shift westward because of the gravitational pull of the Sun upon the Moon. (See also: eclipse)
