Omuta, Fukuoka

Ōmuta (大牟田市; -shi) is a city located in Fukuoka prefecture, Japan.

As of 2003, the city has an estimated population of 134,924 and the density of 1,654.49 persons per km². The total area is 81.55 km².

Omuta city developed as the ore industrial city which centers the Miike coal mine which exists from 1860's to 1997. In 1960,Japanese massmedia observed the Miike dispute which occurred in 1960 being linked with the reform of the Treaty of mutual cooperation and security between Japan and the United States of America.

The city was founded on March 1, 1917.
