Port Chester, New York

Port Chester is a village located in Westchester County, New York. As of the 2000 census, the village had a total population of 27,867, but a July 1, 2002 Census estimate put the village's population at 27,949. As a village, it is located in the Town of Rye.

Port Chester has a Metro North railroad station.

Geography

Port Chester is located at 41°0'18" North, 73°40'8" West (41.005099, -73.668822).

According to the United States Census Bureau, the village has a total area of 6.4 km² (2.5 mi²). 6.1 km² (2.4 mi²) of it is land and 0.3 km² (0.1 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 5.22% water.

Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 27,867 people, 9,531 households, and 6,376 families residing in the village. The population density is 4,559.1/km² (11,824.7/mi²). There are 9,772 housing units at an average density of 1,598.7/km² (4,146.5/mi²). The racial makeup of the village is 60.70% White, 6.99% African American, 0.40% Native American, 2.06% Asian, 0.04% Pacific Islander, 22.98% from other races, and 6.83% from two or more races. 46.23% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 9,531 households out of which 31.7% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 47.0% are married couples living together, 13.6% have a female householder with no husband present, and 33.1% are non-families. 26.7% of all households are made up of individuals and 11.2% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.89 and the average family size is 3.44.

In the village the population is spread out with 22.5% under the age of 18, 10.8% from 18 to 24, 35.2% from 25 to 44, 18.6% from 45 to 64, and 12.9% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 34 years. For every 100 females there are 102.5 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 99.6 males.

The median income for a household in the village is $45,381, and the median income for a family is $51,025. Males have a median income of $32,848 versus $32,461 for females. The per capita income for the village is $21,131. 13.0% of the population and 10.1% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 15.3% of those under the age of 18 and 12.6% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
