The Houston Texans contemplated in this article were a franchise which competed in part of the 1974 season of the World Football League, which was an effort to establish a second major professional league of American football in the United States in competition with the National Football League and have no connection, other than a coincidental one, with the current NFL team of that name. The Texans featured ambidextrous quarterback and former University of Houston star D. C. Nobles, but were underfunded and soon faced grave difficulties which resulted in the team being relocated to Shreveport, Louisiana prior to the close of the season, where they occupied a stadium located at the Fairgrounds (now the site of the Independence Bowl post-season college football game), and were eventually renamed the Shreveport Steamer. They were coached by Marshall Taylor, formerly a star player at Tennessee Tech. The Steamer reappeared for the 1975 season and competed until the league ceased operations partway though that campaign.
