Side chain

Side chain in the context of organic chemistry and biochemistry has different meanings:

  • In organic chemistry and biochemistry a side chain is a part of a molecule attached to a core structure. Often the side chain can vary for a given core. This use is often similar to the term rest or R. See also: Functional group.
  • In biochemistry the peptide or protein side chains are the variable parts of amino acids extending from the peptide backbone.
