St Mary's Rotherhithe

St Mary's Church in Rotherhithe, formerly Surrey, now part of south east London is the local Church of England parish church, dedicated to Mary, mother of Jesus. It is in St Marychurch Street, and covered by the diocese of Southwark.

It was most recently rebuilt in 17141715, to a design by John James (c 1673 – 1746), replacing a medieval church. Launcelot Dowbiggin, a City joiner and surveyor, rebuilt the tower (illustration, right), perhaps to his own design, following the general plan of James'. The rector claims that the crypt shows evidence of a preceding Anglo-Saxon church. The interior of the church was altered in 1876.

It is the place of burial of Christopher Jones , captain of the Mayflower, and of Prince Lee Boo of Palau.
