Student (newspaper)

Student is a weekly, independent newspaper produced by students at the University of Edinburgh. It was founded in 1887, succeeding an earlier publication run by author Robert Louis Stevenson.

Although the newspaper works closely with the University, it is an independent body and has no formal links. This provides a higher degree of editorial independence from the institution to other, student union or university-funded newspapers. The Edinburgh University Students' Association produces a fortnightly magazine called Hype.

The newspaper is widely regarded as one of the best in the United Kingdom, winning awards for its design and content, and with many of its writers going on to become internationally renowned journalists.

Past staff members of Student include the British Chancellor of the Exchequer, Gordon Brown; Lord Steel; MP Robin Cook; "Pop Idol" star Darius Danesh; and Times news reporter Laura Peek .

It has a physical circulation of 8000 copies per issue, but is read by some 20,000 people in Edinburgh.
