The Golden Palominos are a rock music group led by drummer and composer Anton Fier.
Formed in 1981, the first line-up featured Fier, singer-guitarist Arto Lindsay, saxophonist John Zorn, bass guitarist Bill Laswell and violinist/guitarist Fred Frith. This version of The Golden Palominos was heavily influenced by so-called no wave music: it was noisy, but often funky.
This line-up lasted only briefly, and Fier later used the Golden Palominos name for a variety of revolving-door projects with multiple band members, including Michael Stipe, Matthew Sweet, Jack Bruce, Richard Thompson, Bob Mould, and others.
The Golden Palominos moved (slightly) towards country music or roots rock in the mid 1980s, but by the 1990s, Fier had shifted the band towards ambient music and dance music, usually with a female singer (Amanda Kramer , Lori Carson or others). Laswell, Nicky Skopelitis and Bootsy Collins have been involved in this late incarnation of the group.
