The Greatest American

The Greatest American is a public vote, modeled after the 100 Greatest Britons competition, in which citizens of the United States are being asked to nominate, and then later vote for, "the Greatest American".

The competition is being conducted by AOL and the Discovery Channel.

Nominations were accepted through January 31, 2005. Followup programs will include audience-participation discussions and a culling of the nominees down to ten. The producers have not yet indicated how the final vote will be conducted.

Alphabetical list

On April 18, AOL and The Discovery Channel announced the top 100 nominees. The Greatest American will be chosen from the following list:
