The INTERNATIONAL

The INTERNATIONAL is a golf tournament on the United States PGA TOUR held annually (currently in early August) at Castle Pines Golf Club in Castle Rock, Colorado, near Denver. It has the unique distinction of being the only event on that tour which is not conducted at stroke play or match play. Instead, the tournament uses the Modified Stableford scoring system (see Scoring section).

The tournament was first held in 1986, and was called The International through 1993. In 1994, Sprint became the title sponsor, and the event became the Sprint International through 1999. In 2000, Qwest took over as primary sponsor, and the tournament became The International Presented by Qwest. The following year, the tournament was rebranded as The INTERNATIONAL Presented by Qwest; Qwest dropped its sponsorship following the 2002 tournament.

Scoring

The Modified Stableford system gives golfers points on each hole, based on the golfer's score relative to par. It is designed to reward players for taking chances to go for birdies (or better), as the reward for a low score on a hole is typically greater than the punishment for a poor score. The golfer's scores on each hole in his round are added. The scoring operates as follows:

  • Double eagle: +8
  • Eagle: +5
  • Birdie: +2
  • Par: 0
  • Bogey: -1
  • Double bogey or worse: -3
