The Soup Dragons

The Soup Dragons was a Scottish indie rock band of the late 80s and early 90s. They were formed in 1985 and broke-up ten years later. The line up was Sean Dickson (vocals, lead guitar), Jim McCulloch (guitar, second voice) and Sushil K. Dade (bass). Original drummer Ross A. Sinclair left the group after the first album to pursue a career in art and was replaced by Paul Quinn. Most of their songs were written by Dickson, while some were co-written Dickson/McCulloch.

They originated from Belshill, a town very near to Glasgow, Scotland. They were part of the Belshill Sound, a group of connected bands that often shared members, including the BMX Bandits and Teenage Fanclub.

They were named after a character in the popular 70s children's TV show The Clangers.

They only had one notable hit single in the UK, I'm Free (1990) a cover of a Rolling Stones song.

Their sound underwent a major change between the release of the first and second album - from a rock guitar sound tending towards heavy rock they suddenly changed to an indie-dance sound with I'm Free and subsequent albums. This progression mirrored that of Primal Scream and can be attributed to the rise of the ecstasy fuelled acid house rave scene in the UK.
